Data migration, in it’s simplest terms, is the science of taking data from one or more sources, and physically moving it to one or more targets.

In practice, its a complicated and detailed process of understanding the data in great detail and changing it from the way it currently exists to the way the destination needs it to be.

For example, in one system a name might exist in one field called Name, but in another, it may be three fields, First Name, Middle Name(s), Surname.

Data migration teams must analyse all sources and targets in scope and work out and apply whatever changes need to be made. They also need to check the quality of the data to make sure it is fit for purpose, and also reconcile the data to know everything has moved successfully.
